Panhellenic Toast

I thought this was cool. It's from the College of William and Mary. they start about 30 seconds in.

DGTess 09-28-2010 05:57 PM

Outstanding! Thank you for highlighting this.

whiteandblack 09-28-2010 06:27 PM

pretty awesome.

honeychile 09-28-2010 08:30 PM

I think it would be totally awesome if every Recruitment started with something like that! My biggest regret is that there isn't a chapter of Alpha Delta Pi there.

Just out of curiosity, when was the last sorority chapter installed at William & Mary?

Scully 09-28-2010 09:24 PM

I love that, thank you!

SWTXBelle 09-28-2010 09:25 PM

Wonderful!

honeychile 09-28-2010 10:08 PM

The more I watch that, the more I think that every greek campus could benefit by something similar!

pomplemousse12 09-28-2010 11:25 PM

I've watched this video tons of times, and it's so amazing! I'm sad that there isn't a chapter of Alpha Phi there because I'd love to hear what they'd say. At the end of each round of recruitment here, all of the sororities gather together with the PNMs like in this video, but we recite the Panhellenic Creed. Our goal this year is to memorize it.

I've already figured out one for ADPi! :D

We did that at Panhel meetings - I think it's awesome!

I love this!

Would someone with better ears than I have please transcribe the toasts?

Hally 09-29-2010 06:52 PM

Panhellenic toast

This tradition has been around for awhile. It wasn't new when my daughter was there and that has been awhile. In the beginning they are humming, you just can't hear them. They do this every day after the last party during rush. By the end of the week they are singing it in their sleep. My daughter said as a PNM when it is dark out the humming is a little freaky. There are lots of ghosts in Williamsburg! Makes me smile--

KKGCaroline 09-29-2010 08:18 PM

This was lovely....thanks OP!

Looks as if I have a long time waiting for expansion there!

Thanks, NinjaPoodle!

lovespink88 09-29-2010 08:58 PM

Beautiful!

But I did LOL when Gamma Phi sat down and Pi Phi stood up. The three groups that went ahead of Pi Phi were all dressed normally, then out of no where there's "cat in the hat" hat and a girl in a banana suit. Not knocking the Pi Phis, but it was just very unexpected! :)

Ok, did the best I could, someone help me fill in the gaps if you can. Sometimes with muffled words if you know what to expect you can figure it out, but also sometimes the meter is fudged making it tricky.

And here's to all women of Greek fraternity,
Whatever creed or motto
Whatever they may be
Our strength is our country, our God, democracy,
May we never be found wanting in allegiance to these three.

And here's to all the Phi Mus,
Who wear the heart in hand
The rose and white ribbon
That binds us in our bond
From the lion take our courage,
Our strength and honor too
May we always have the memory
Of the love that means PHI MU!

And here is to Kappa Theta
The colors black and gold
Our kite is what unites us
With sisters young and old.
Our stars, brightly shining,
Will guide us night and day
From KAPPA ALPHA THETA
Our hearts will never stray!

And here's to Kappa Delta
The diamond shield we wear
Throughout our lives in sisterhood
Our friendships we will share.
Our strength is our emerald,
Our beauty our white rose,
Through TA KALA DIOKOMEN
Our Love ever grows!

And here's to Gamma Phi
Whose crescent shines so bright,
With the pink carnation,
And browns of dark and light.
Our love is for our sisters,
And loyal we will be.
In GAMMA PHI BETA
True friendships you will see!

And here's the Pi Phi Angels
in wine and silver blue
The friendship that we share is
Of sisters ever true.
Our hopes and aspirations,
We aim our arrows high.
We will always be united
In our PI BETA PHI!

And here's to the Deltas
The silver, gold and blue.
Our never ending circle,
Our pearl and pine tree too.
Our sisterhood is special
True friends we'll always be
Your happiness is our hope
In love for Deltas three!

And here's to Chi Omega
The cardinal and the straw
And to the white carnation,
The fairest flower of all
And to the skull and crossbones
The letters and the owl
May we never ______ broken(?)
Our BELOVED SACRED VOWS!

And here's to Kappa Gamma
And to the key of gold
Unlocking love and loyalty
________- unfold?
The beautiful and good
To us will always be
The blue and blue of friendships true
Of K K G!

And here's to the lyre
With pearls and friendships true
Our sisterhood we cherish
In everything we do
Together we will honor
The sacred vows that tie
And ever we will seek the heights
In the name of ALPHA CHI!

And here's to Delta Gamma
Her anchor and her shield
Her loyalty united
And friendships ever sealed
Our cream rose is our beauty
Our bronze, pink, and blue
And to our own dear DELTA G
We always will be true!

And here's to all women of Greek fraternity,
Whatever creed or motto
Whatever they may be
Our strength is our country, our God, democracy,
May we never be found wanting in allegiance to these three.

SWTXBelle 09-29-2010 09:39 PM

I think that these are right.

Although, I've never taken part in Sorority Recruitment, being on the Y-chromosome side of things, I think that this video is quite wonderful.

When I was in school and whenever the Greeks were together, it was always the sororities who led us all in song, which really brought us together.

I didn't listen to it, but I am guessing that for Delta Gamma it is bronze pink and blue. Maybe the next word is anchor or Hannah? If I listen I'll see what I come up with.

deltag_girl 09-29-2010 11:50 PM

thanks for the translation! i was googling for the words earlier and came up with nothing!

i still absolutely love this idea. i think ever school should do this! and now being an adviser and seeing a different side of things, i definitely see the importance more than ever!

love love love!

Or something similar, yeah. Thanks!

Honestly with a few of them I couldn't understand the letters even the first time they said them. Kappa Theta and Chi Omega for example, one because I wasn't expecting it and one because it was muffled. I'm sure I've messed up a few of the tiny words, but we have the jist of most of it.

Lyrics to The Panhellenic Toast

Hi Everyone,

Below are the lyrics to the W&M Panhellenic Toast. My senior year I was the Inter-Sorority Council President at William & Mary and my favorite part of the job was getting to lead the Toast during Recruitment. Every year students, residents, tourists, and former alumni would also stop and listen as we sang (shouted) in Sorority Court. It's a fabulous tradition!

-Heather Irene, AXO

The Panhellenic Toast
The College of William and Mary

(Humming proceeds the song as Chapter members exits their houses)

All: Here’s to all the women of Greek Fraternity
Whatever their creed or motto, wherever they may be.
Our strength is on our country, our God, democracy.
May we never be found wanting in allegiance to these three!

Phi Mu: Now here’s to all the Phi Mu’s who wear the heart and hand
To the rose and white ribbons that bind us in our bond
From the lion we take our courage, our strength and honor, too.
May we always have the memory of that love that means Phi Mu!

Kappa Alpha Theta: And here’s to dear old Theta, colors of black and gold.
Our kites will e’re unite us with sisters young and old
Twin stars so brightly shining will guide us night and day
From Kappa Alpha Theta our hearts will never stray!

Kappa Delta: And here’s to Kappa Delta, the diamond shield we wear.
Throughout our lives in sisterhood our friendships we will share.
Our truth is in our emerald, our beauty our white rose
Through Ta Kala Diokomen our love forever grows!

Gamma Phi Beta: And here’s to Gamma Phis who crescent shines so bright.
With the pink carnation and browns of dark and light.
Our love is with our sisters and loyal we will be,
In Gamma Phi Beta true friendships you will see!

Pi Beta Phi: And here’s to Pi Phi angels, the wine and silver blue.
The friendships that we cherish, and sisters ever true.
Our hopes and aspirations, we aim our arrows high.
May we always be united in our Pi Beta Phi!

Delta Delta Delta: And here’s to all Tri-Deltas, the silver gold and blue.
The never ending circle, the pearl and pine tree, too.
Our sisterhood so special, good friends we’ll ever be.
Your happiness is our hope and love for the Deltas three!

Chi Omega: And here’s to Chi Omega, the cardinal and the straw.
And to the white carnation, the fairest flower of all.
And to the skull and crossbones, the letters and the owl
May we ever keep unbroken our love and sacred vows!

Kappa Kappa Gamma: And here’s to Kappa Gamma and to her key of gold.
Unlocking love and loyalty her bond will ever hold.
The beautiful and good to us will always be
The blue and blue, the friendships true of KKG!

Alpha Chi Omega: And here’s to the lyre with pearls of friendship true.
Our sisterhood we cherish in everything we do.
Together we will honor the sacred vows that tie.
And ever will we seek the heights in the name of Alpha Chi!

Delta Gamma: And here’s to Delta Gamma our anchor and our shield.
Our loyalty united, our friendships ever sealed.
The cream rose deems her beauty, amidst bronze pink and blue.
And to our own fraternity we always will be true!

Repeat first verse:

All: Here’s to all the women of Greek Fraternity
Whatever their creed or motto, wherever they may be.
Our strength is on our country, our God, democracy.
May we never be found wanting in allegiance to these three!

(song ends with all Chapters humming as they return to their houses)

NinjaPoodle 10-06-2010 06:49 PM

Thanks for posting the lyrics! Just curious, how long has this tradition been going on @ W&M?

heatherirene 10-06-2010 08:45 PM

NinjaPoodle, I know the W&M Panhellenic Toast goes back to at least 1977--probably much further. I'll see if I can find out.

-Heather Irene

honeychile 10-06-2010 10:34 PM

Heather Irene, I think it's one of the very best Panhellenic traditions that I've ever seen - congratulations!

GammaBelle 10-10-2010 08:32 PM

HeatherIrene, you beat me to translating the lyrics. I'm a W&M grad too! :) I believe the panhellenic toast started sometime in the 70s--our HCB president graduated in 1969 and they weren't using it at that time.

No expansion discussion at W&M--total has been 90 there forever and ever and ever =)

honeychile 10-11-2010 09:12 PM

I keep coming back to this and have another question - is the order in which the sororities sing always the same? How was it decided?

As for expansion, well, as much as I'd love to see it, it's too late for me! ;)

NinjaPoodle 04-15-2011 12:26 AM

Bringing this back to the top because I respect traditions, especially cool ones!

Katmandu 04-15-2011 07:32 PM

Ok, that brought a tear to my eyes. Beautiful!!

CutiePie2000 04-16-2011 01:21 AM

I'd love to add this to my own local campus, but it would have to be adapted somewhat, as some chapters are there and others are not.
