Band question

I have a niece who's a HS junior. Her mother is a 'Bama grad who supports Auburn, and a very southern lady, and greek, so I suspect niece will be pushed to a big southern state school and encouraged to rush.

Niece is also in band.

Should she choose to remain in band in college, would this impact participation in a sorority at one of these schools? I seem to remember some discussion a few years ago about band and sorority fall activities not meshing well together.

This is *just* my curiosity; she has not yet inquired about my sorority experience. Of course, I will write a recommendation if she asks, and it's too soon for me to worry about it.

Band is a scholarship activity. Scholarships trump other activities as that is how you pay for your schooling. Do you think football players/cheerleasers can't be in fraternities/sororities because football/cheering "interferes?" Definitely not. Don't worry a bit about it.

It probably depends on the school and the band director. I know that at Auburn, band does conflict. A friend's daughter there had to do COB after formal recruitment because her band rehearsal schedule conflicted with recruitment.

I don't call that interferring. Lots of majors and activities cause that to happen. But you can belong to both...you get excused absenses from the chapter for those things. In the 60s we had a band member in our chapter and all the cheerleaders were in sororities. And this was at Alabama,
