University of Virginia Suspensions and Termination.

Kappa Sigma, Sigma Alpha Mu and Theta Chi have been suspended at UVA. Pi Kappa Alpha's "Alpha Chapter" at UVA had their Charter revoked by the Fraternity.

While part of me hates to see old chapters get the boot, we’re ABSOLUTELY doing it to ourselves. I cannot understand how this constant mistreatment of new members continues. Do brothers ignore what their Headquarters tell them? Do they not read?

And I do applaud universities for cracking down! Something’s got to give.

I am a firm believer that members of Alpha/Founding chapters owe more to their organizations than other chapters. They should be upholding standards that the founders created and setting an standard for all the rest.

Something that stuck out to me in this article and others regarding this situation at UVA: The national org of Pi Kappa Alpha is going to pursue civil litigation against the collegiate members who were involved. Is this typical in cases of more severe hazing?

No...first time I've seen it.

PGD-GRAD, would you like the Mods to remove duplicate posts when we see them?

Low D Flat 04-26-2024 12:23 PM

I don't think it's cynical. The national organization suffered harm, and it's protecting the interests of all members by showing UVA how strongly it condemns the students' actions. It just seems like good management to me.

Relationship with Alpha chapters.

In some ways, it is more difficult to be an Alpha chapter. For Alpha Phi Omega, they almost had to do the rechartering of the Alpha chapter in Secret due to the number of members who wanted to attend. (In many cases from halfway around the planet).

honeychile—YES! Please remove multiple posts. I’ve been using “Go Advanced” but now and then even it goes haywire.

Low D Flat: I DO agree with you. I didn’t state well what I meant. In the past I’ve seen fraternity nationals let the school play “the bad guy” and then enter in when they absolutely have to. But yes—it should be a partnership—after all, our chapters are really like “guests” on their respective campuses. And when a guest overstays his/her welcome-then their governing body needs to work worth the campus. And yes—it DOES show other chapters that headquarters staff mean business.

More about hazing at UVA. Also mentions St Elmo Hall, but there have been no charges against them.
