copyright letters?

once again, im slow in the search feature department and i didnt find what i was looking for. From the title of this post you may well assume that i want to know how if there is a way i can search for copyrighted greek letters. I was approached by the greek affairs head chair today and he asked me if i knew my letters were in use by any other organization. i told him that i was aware that they are in use as a a title for a social work major group ( i saw it on some college's webpage) and he asked me if i knew they were copyrighted. i dont. and i've been proudly displaying these letters for a year and a half. ive heard of two groups having the same name, and ive read some of the post about that very topic, but that post was very long, and i am actually interested in just a listing, if it even exists.

Use that link to search trademarks. I don't think "copyright" is the term your Greek affairs person meant.

Individual letters cannot be TRADEMARKED, but names of orgs can. Also, just because an organization's name is TRADEMARKED, it doesn't mean that another organization can't use it for chapter designation purposes. For example, Delta Zeta the GLO is trademarked, but there are plenty of other GLOs with Delta Zeta as their chapter name/designation.

Usually if two or more groups share a name, the official name is a bit longer, and it's the official name that is registered (e.g. Kappa Alpha Order and Kappa Alpha Society). Sometimes they have some sort of agreement to share the name and other times, all they have in common is the name, and their purpose is very different (e.g. one is a social group and the other is academic)
