The same thing happened with my Chapter after we were founded....it took awhile for the people who were only in it for a resume boost to leave the Chapter or graduate. I'm the Alumni Advisor for the Chapter now and they are doing really well. The Executive Board is working well together and after our 1st Brotherhood Retreat this past summer, the Brotherhood as a whole is more united than it has ever been.

I had been a member of a social sorority (Chi Omega), that closed the year before, so I was looking for some sort of new activity to get involved with on campus. I have to admit, things were still pretty disorganized back then and the chapter hadn't really began to come together as a cohesive group. There wasn't really a rush, recruitment, or selection process of any kind other than receiving letter saying "you have a GPA of 3.0 or higher, you are eligible to join." They had an interest meeting, and tons of people went to it, and basically, everyone who showed up was initiated.

I think by the end of my senior year, things had started to get on track- the people who weren't really into it had gone, and the people who remained were the ones who wanted to be active and involved. Many of the initial members I think were just looking for something to put on their resume, and didn't want to come to meetings, do service projects, have a big or little brother, etc.
This amazes me. My chapter was very selective and our recruitment was pretty competitive. We had so many people come out we usually set our own quota to keep us from getting crazy big. We spent hours voting on prospectives. Most semesters, we got kicked out of more than one venue because the previous one closed. Once they were allowed to be initiates we voted on them every two weeks and usually let a few go.

Every chapter has to find what works for them, though. We were lucky to always have a lot of interested people who had a 3.0.

My time in Phi Sig was the best time of my life. Those brothers dominate most of my college memories. I hate that Phi Sig doesn't have more of an alumnae presence.
