Be with your family during this time...
Yes, you could go separately and then spend recruitment week being at recruitment.
But this is a time where you should be with your family. You are there to say goodbye to Grandma, but you are also there to be part of your family.
The first lesson of joining a GLO-- family and school (and God, where applicable to you) come first.
A sophomore is already at a competitive disadvantage at a large southern campus. It isn't impossible to get a bid as a soph at the campus, but come on... you're really telling me that you're going to be 100% focused on being Suzy Smiley during Recruitment Week and not thinking about the importance of being with your family during a life-changing event for your family.
Yes, Grandma wouldn't want to imposition you. But she's dying. Show your parents some respect and if you're not going to be there for Grandma, at least be there for your mom/dad who's about to lose their own mother...
There are plenty of campus activities to get involved with on your campus. You can also COB/COR if the sororities don't make total-- register your interest at the office of Greek Life.
Be with your family-- part of being an adult is setting priorities and this is one of those times where obligation wins out over want.
