AOII's Object:

The object of the Fraternity shall be to encourage a spirit of Fraternity and love among its members; to stand at all times for character, dignity, scholarship, and college loyalty; to strive for and support the best interest of the colleges and universities in which chapters are installed, and in no way to disregard, injure, or sacrifice those interests for the sake of prestige or advancement of the Fraternity or any of its chapters.

I personally love the first two lines. "The object of the Fraternity shall be to encourage a spirit of Fraternity and love among its members; to stand at all times for character, dignity, scholarship, and college loyalty"

Sums up my life right there

Also, I love reading all these creeds, missions, purposes, etc. They are all so beautifully written!

Justice to each fellow man
Wisdom in each deed and plan
Loyalty to every friend
Faith that sorrow can transcend
Truth to God and truth to self
Honor valued over wealth
This is the creed that in us lies
The creed of loyal Theta Phis.
The white rose for its purity
The sapphire blue for loyalty
The compass for its needle sure
That holds our course firm and secure

The silver for a precious faith
That knows no end not even death
This is the creed that in us lies
The creed of loyal Theta Phis.

I believe in Delta Tau Delta,
For the Education of Youth and the Inspiration of Maturity
So I may better Learn and Live the Truth

I believe in Delta Tau Delta,
As a Shrine of International Brotherhood;
Her Cornerstone Friendship
Her Foundation Conscience
Her Columns Aspiration
Her Girders Self-Restraint
Her Doorway Opportunity
Her Windows Understanding
Her Strength the Everlasting Arms

I believe in Delta Tau Delta,
As an abiding influence to help me do my work,
Fulfill my obligations,
Maintain my self-respect,
And bring about that Happy Life wherein I may more truly love my fellow man, serve my Country and obey my God.

SIGMA TAU GAMMA CREED

I believe that the true spirit of Fraternalism is a personal devotion to one's ideals. It has its roots in definite, tangible things. It springs out of a love of God and worth of one's fellow man. It grows into qualities of mind and soul. It is not the attitude toward a few selected ends, but rather the abiding spirit in which all things are done, all difficulties met, all successes received, all obstacles overcome.

I believe that the true spirit of Fraternalism is a breath that breathes itself into the life and being of those who live it, becoming an unconscious part of them, ruling and molding their thoughts and acts. We may call it the right attitude towards life, towards the world, towards right and wrong, towards the beautiful and good, towards duty and faith in God.

I believe that the true spirit of Fraternalism is a thing that grows. It is first associated almost exclusively with a narrow circle of fellow students, but it broadens with a widening understanding until it takes in all the important relationships of life. It enters the domain of private life as thoroughly as in public life. It teaches the fulfillment of obligations to school, state and church.

I believe that Sigma Tau Gamma endeavors to bind men together in a fraternal brotherhood based upon these eternal and immutable truths, which are set forth in the Principles and in the Code of Conduct of our Fraternity.

In this belief, I will endeavor to make my college and my own chapter of Sigma Tau Gamma more honored and respected by all men, and will endeavor to conduct myself so that I will ever bring credit and honor to our Fraternity.

SIGMA TAU GAMMA'S PRINCIPLES

Sigma Tau Gamma was founded with the understanding that all men are social creatures and that friendships made in college days are lasting ones. Believing that a social Fraternity must be dedicated to the highest ideals of manhood and brotherhood; to congeniality, the development of good personal characteristics and social poise; to good scholarship, mature thinking and action; to good citizenship, democratic principles and acceptance of responsibility; and, to loyalty and service to college, community, country and Fraternity; Founder Edward H. McCune authored a set of Principles. Embraced by our Founders and early members, these Principles have become our guide.

I was searching for something completely different and I found this thread, and decided to bump it. I really appreciate the creeds of other organizations because they articulate values in a way we cannot really do conversationally.

I don't think I have a favorite part of The Preamble, since it's quite short:
"We, the members of The Delta Chi Fraternity, believing that great advantages are to be derived from a brotherhood of college and university men, appreciating that close association may promote friendship, develop character, advance justice, and assist in the acquisition of a sound education, do ordain and establish this Constitution."

However I do like this quote from our old pledge manual about our four core values:
"What more cherished privilege is ours than that of inspiring human association, of friendship? What finer personal quality could we desire than strength of character? What greater cause to champion than justice? What more worthy object of endeavor than the acquisition of a sound education?"

The values in our Preamble are expanded upon in our Ten Basic Expectations:
  1. I will strive for academic achievement and practice academic integrity.
  2. I will respect the dignity and worth of all persons. I will not physically, mentally, psychologically or sexually abuse or haze any human being.
  3. I will protect the health and safety of all human beings.
  4. I will respect my property and the property of others; therefore, I will neither abuse nor tolerate the abuse of property.
  5. I will meet my financial obligations in a timely manner.
  6. I will neither use nor support the use of illegal drugs; I will neither abuse nor support the abuse of alcohol.
  7. I will acknowledge that a clean and attractive environment is essential to both physical and mental health; therefore, I will do all in my power to see that the chapter property is safe, properly cleaned and maintained.
  8. I will know and understand the ideals expressed in my fraternity Ritual and will incorporate them into my daily life.
  9. I will exercise compassion and understanding in dealing with all persons.
  10. I will challenge all my fraternity members to abide by these fraternity obligations and will confront those who violate them.
I highlighted my favorites in red and buff. Number 8 is my favorite expectation, and number 9 is the one I feel I need to work on the most/be most conscious of upholding.
My favorites in the Expectations are 2, 3, 6, 8 and 9.

The best thing I've read Delta Chi related was from Founding Father Johnson: "Delta Chi was my first love, and it shall be my last."

Incredibly similar! I've wondered for years if there was any connection, but even after talking to several current and past National Officers and reading our last two history books, I've found nothing. There's gotta be something, though, and I intend to keep on digging.

There's not much in Phi Mu's Creed that doesn't touch me deeply every time I hear or say it. I do like that it doesn't say anything so vague as "I believe in my fraternity." Rather, it states very simply for what we stand, and it is essentially the promise of every member to live up to those ideals of Love, Honor, and Truth. There's a reason many Phi Mus like to "Keep Living the Creed," and I believe that's because our Creed is something we can live. Phi Mu's Creed isn't just made of vague beliefs that are left open to interpretation; it's a way of life.

The Creed of Phi Mu Fraternity

To lend to those less fortunate a helping hand.
To think of God as a protector and guide of us all.
To keep forever sacred the memory of those we have loved and lost.
To be to others what we would they would be to us.
To keep our lives gentle, merciful, and just,
Thus being true to the womanhood of love.

To walk in the way of honor, guarding the purity of our thoughts and deeds.
Being steadfast in every duty, small or large.
Believing that our given word is binding.
Striving to esteem the inner man above culture, wealth, or pedigree.
Being honorable, courteous, tender,
Thus being true to the womanhood of honor.

To serve in the light of truth, avoiding egotism, narrowness, and scorn.
To give freely of our sympathies.
To reverence God as our Maker, striving to serve Him in all things.
To minister to the needy and unfortunate.
To practice day by day love, honor, truth,
Thus keeping true to the meaning, spirit, and reality of Phi Mu.

Our creed touches me very deeply. As a new sister (I initiated Fall 2009), the creed what was what moved me to tears on Pref night and brought me back on Bid Day. If I had to choose a favorite line, it would be "To practice day by day love, honor truth." It reminds me, even in times of anger or sadness, to always live up to the ideals of Phi Mu!

Although I love the entire AST creed, I think my favorite part is the beginning...

As a member of Alpha Sigma Tau,
I believe in the permanance and loveliness of its ideals.

I am also in love with the open motto:

Active, Self-Reliant, Trustworthy

I like our open motto as well.

Unto Us Has Befallen a Mighty Friendship

Though I do like the alternate translation better.

Our Friendship Has Made Us Strong.

You must not be in an old alumni chapter. They sing it so slow that I can't breathe. lol

Though I did tear up when i heard the hymn for the first time as an aspirant.
