Disadvantage??

Im planning to go through rush in the fall, but I have a few questions. First of all, Im not a legacy to any sorority & Im coming from out of state and the only people I know are the girls I met at Orientation who are going through rush too (all who are awesome girls, by the way). Anyway, a friend of mine who is going through rush at Alabama told me that out of state schools have quotas that require them to reserve spots in their sororities just for in-state girls. Is this BS or is there truth in this?? Since Im not a legacy or in-state, am I screwed?? Please let me know. Thanks yall! Megan

I've never heard of a sorority giving priority or saving spots for in-state gals. I'd say, if anything, you have the advantage being from out of state-you'll have more to talk about during rush than just "so whats your major?"

Although I suppose it would be possible for a college somewhere to have this policy you should be able to to direct any questions to someone @ the college/university where you are rushing. Just look up the rush information on their web site & if all else fails send an email to whatever email address they provide for questions.

I've never heard of that, either, and I'm on my 3rd state school!

Your Recruitment Counselor (Rho Chi) should be able to help you with questions like that.

I doubt that any group has any "official" rule, but I do know that there are certain groups at certain schools who really like to get girls from in state. Somewhere like Alabama probably has groups like this, which is probably why Megan's friend heard about it. I'm sure it's one of the normal things at any Southern, cut-throat rush (like LSU or Ole Miss). That doesn't mean it's condoned by the school or the groups' National, or that it's even talked about publicly, but it could happen.

Regardless, Megan, lots of groups will like the fact that you're from out of state and it will help you stand out. Keep an open mind, be yourself, and hopefully you'll end up in the best place for you!

Good luck!

Thanks xo_kathy for putting that spin on it, I've never thought that maybe it was something that wasn't condoned but was still practiced!

Meg,

No one in my family is Greek and I'm from out-of-state, but I still found my home. Recs aren't big at my school, but they may be at yours. I know I didn't know anyone who could give me a rec when I went through recruitment, but I'm sure if you ask around, you can find someone. Best of luck, and I hope you find your home

Sharon

Recs will be important at Alabama. That being said, I don't think you are SOL if you don't have any, but it will give you an advantage, and may be crucial for some groups. The fact that you are from out of state will not be such a big deal -UA is a huge school and there are people there from everywhere.
There is a thread on GC of women who are willing to either write recs for you or assist you in finding someone in your area to write one for you. Start asking around in your hometown as well, teachers, friend's moms, other women you know. You might be surprised how many you find who were in sororities and you didnt know it.

my chapter at fl. state always

went for the out of state girls-we considered them "exotic", & interesting. don't let it hold you back. you will probably hear quite a few "facts" that are really rumors, so just take all you hear with a grain of salt, and dazzle them all. good luck!!

I was not a legacy, I am also from out-of-state (but I don't go to a huge state school), and also was a sophomore. Recommendations could definitely help!

here goes i will try to answer your question... there is no quota system for in or out of state girls, each house likes getting in state girls b/c they are more likely to stay all four years but we also like out of state girls b/c it is interesting to hear reasons why they chose bama (esp. if they aren't from surrounding states) and it is easier to remember an awesome girl from texas than the 100s of awesome girls from alabama. if you have any other questions just pm me!!! :O)
